Restaurants

You find restaurants in the neighbouring villages, offering traditional Hungarian food, Hungarian style fast food, pizza, one even authentic Fillippino cuisine. You also find restaurants in the hotels and some guesthouses. Some vegetarian food is offered in most places.

Andezit Restaurant (Bér, Virágospuszta): the restaurant of the Andezit Hotel offers traditional Hungarian dishes. The wild boar-mangalica breed is the house specialty.

Rózsakert (Bercel): located on the main road near the supermarket, it serves Hungarian food and pizza, and is also a great place for a beer on the long terrace.

Malom Udvar (Bér): built next to a still functional water mill, this pleasant restaurant offers Hungarian and Philippino dishes. Later cooked by the chef from the distant island who found a new home in Hungary.

Check the Accommodation section too, for places to eat, and we will also list more here soon.

Cooking on campfire

A very popular way to enjoy food and the company of others is cooking over the campfire in a traditional Hungarian bogrács hanged on a metal tripod. Offered as a service for groups in guesthouses and some restaurants, the usual cuisine is traditional Hungarian with a lot of meat and paprika. If you stay in a place where you can make a fire and cook for yourself, obviously it is up to you what you put in the pot.

Drinks

There are little, simple pubs and cafés in every village, some are quite pleasant. People, obviously, make their own wines and spirits, and you can often get some directly from the producer.

Shopping

You find little shops in every village, but they offer basic items and are open for short hours only. A well-stocked bigger supermarket is in the nearby village of Bercel, here you find an ATM, some other shops (hardware, fruit and vegetable, newspapers etc). A little market selling locally grown produce is held on the weekends. If you need some special items or have to change money, the nearby city of Balassagyarmat is the place to visit. A warning for visitors: the Hungarian government doesn’t want people to shop on Sundays and most shops have to be closed by law on this designated family day. Restaurants, cafés, pubs and some small shops are open.

Tobacco

If you are an addict of this poisonous legal drug, be warned: Hungary is not a smoker friendly place. Tobacco products are NOT sold at shops, supermarkets, restaurants, petrol stations, only at a few licensed tobacconists.  They are marked with a sign similar to the one shown. The nearest tobacco shops are in Bercel and Szanda.
